About the position

The City of Chicago is seeking a Civil Engineer IV to join the Chicago Department of Transportation, specifically within the Division of Bridges. This position is responsible for managing bridge and tunnel projects and contracts, which includes coordinating with local stakeholders, state and federal agencies, and other permitting bodies. The role requires a proactive approach to responding to site conditions, reviewing and processing design and project documents, and collaborating with various departments and programs. The successful candidate may also need to access tunnels and bridges throughout Chicago as part of their duties. This position is classified under the career service and is open to the public as well as current city employees who are part of the relevant collective bargaining agreement. The starting salary for this role is $93,780.00, and the work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Candidates must adhere to specific application instructions to ensure their bids are considered, and additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Manage bridge and tunnel projects and contracts.
  • Coordinate with local stakeholders and local/state/federal agencies.
  • Respond to site conditions of projects.
  • Review and process design and project documents.
  • Coordinate with other departments and programs.
  • Access tunnels and bridges within Chicago as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a directly related field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible Civil Engineering experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous work experience as a Resident Engineer, Assistant Resident Engineer, or Design Engineer on major roadway or bridge projects.
  • Proficiency in using construction management software.
  • Previous work experience on design or construction projects funded by IDOT / FHWA.
  • Knowledge of IDOT's documentation and design/construction standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
