About the position

HDR is currently seeking a Civil Engineer - Railroad to join our Freight Railroad Team in Omaha, Nebraska. In this role, you will serve in a technical capacity under the guidance of a Project Manager, where your primary responsibilities will include preparing plans, specifications, and cost estimates for railroad track and civil projects for both private and public-sector clients. Your civil and railroad design tasks may encompass project layout, geometrics, site planning, drainage, and utilities, as well as calculating quantities, reviewing construction submittals, and coordinating with other disciplines. As a project engineer, you will work independently on small- to mid-sized projects while also assisting senior engineers on larger projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Your role will involve participating in proposal development and other marketing activities, directing engineers-in-training, designers, and technicians, and planning, organizing, and coordinating with other technical and clerical professionals on multi-disciplinary teams. You will also assist in the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, including the planning and environmental clearance process. Quality control reviews and design checks of railroad projects will be part of your responsibilities, and you may be required to travel periodically for client visits, site assessments, and construction inspections as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in a technical role under a Project Manager.

  • Perform civil and railroad design tasks including project layout, geometrics, site, drainage, and utilities.
  • Calculate quantities, review construction submittals, and coordinate with other disciplines.
  • Work independently as a project engineer on small- to mid-sized projects and assist senior engineers on larger projects.
  • Participate in proposal development and other marketing activities.
  • Direct engineers-in-training, designers, and technicians.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate with other technical and clerical professionals on multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Perform quality control reviews and design checks of railroad projects.
  • Travel periodically for client visits, site visits, field assessments, and construction inspections.

Requirements

  • BS in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) - Civil license.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in transportation-related design (e.g., roadway, site/civil, railroads or transit, or other linear corridor design).
  • Interest in the freight railroad industry.
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience using MicroStation and InRoads, OpenRoads, OpenRail, or other BIM Software (AutoCAD, Civil3D, Geopak, etc.).
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must have a valid U.S. Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience within the railroad engineering industry.
  • Local project experience is a plus.
  • Construction inspection or construction management experience is a plus.
