About the position

The Civil Engineer Series position at the NYC Transit Authority involves performing structural inspections and ensuring the safety of the transit infrastructure. The role requires comprehensive inspections of various structures, analysis of defects, preparation of repair plans, and providing technical guidance to inspection teams. The position is critical for maintaining the integrity of subway tunnels, retaining walls, and underground stations, and includes responsibilities for emergency response and field support.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive inspections of concrete and steel structures to ensure safety.
  • Maintain a status and recommended action database for structural conditions.
  • Analyze defects and prepare designs and repair plans.
  • Supervise on-site testing and prepare recommendations for alterations or repairs.
  • Analyze report data, perform cost estimates, and prepare scopes of work for repair projects.
  • Provide technical guidance and administrative direction to the Subway Nights Structural Inspection Program.
  • Attend planning, design, and field meetings to represent the Division.
  • Review Master Plans, Scopes of Work, and Structural Design calculations.
  • Perform final inspections of completed work and generate punch lists.
  • Provide field support to in-house forces and capital project supervision.
  • Respond to trouble calls and emergencies related to structural conditions on a 24/7 basis.

Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work for Assistant Civil Engineer.
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License and either a master's degree in civil engineering with three years of experience or four years of full-time experience for Civil Engineer I-III.
  • At least one year of experience as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project for placement in level II and III.

Nice-to-haves

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite and internet/mobile applications.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation and nonconformity databases.
  • Knowledge of structural inspection of concrete and steel.
  • Ability to read and write technical drawings and correspondence.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction design and code issues.
