About the position

This position is in the Technical Service Branch of the Western Federal Lands Highway Division, focusing on the bridge and structural components of the Federal Lands Highway program. The role involves providing technical support and developing sound practices for planning, inspection, design, construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of structures on Federal lands across multiple states.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply relevant structural codes for design, construction, testing, and maintenance of structures, including seismic design and retrofit.
  • Develop Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) for bridges and other highway structures that comply with FLH Bridge Design Manual and other appropriate standards.
  • Use advanced analysis and CADD software to develop novel design concepts for new construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Coordinate with project team leaders and other disciplines to gather information for sound engineering decisions regarding structures.
  • Develop preliminary plans for structures showing type, size, and location (TS&L) under the guidance of the team leader.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and meet specialized experience qualifications.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education/experience.
  • For GS-11: One year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level or equivalent, including engineering design support for highway improvement projects.
  • For GS-12: One year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent, including engineering design services for multi-span bridges.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in environmentally challenging settings.
  • Professional registration or licensure as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Experience with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).
