About the position

The Civil Engineer (Structural) position serves as the Senior Bridge Programs Engineer on the Management and Preservation Team within the Office of Bridge and Structures. This role is pivotal in providing national leadership in the implementation and advancement of Federal-aid highway programs, focusing on the management and preservation of highway bridges, tunnels, and other structures. The engineer will oversee critical databases such as the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) and National Tunnel Inventory (NTI), ensuring the integrity and quality of data related to these infrastructures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and support for FHWA's oversight of Federal-aid highway programs involving funding of highway bridges, tunnels, and other structures.
  • Lead FHWA's transportation performance management, asset management, and preservation activities related to highway bridges, tunnels, and other structures.
  • Direct the development and deployment of state-of-the-art practices and emerging technologies for bridge and tunnel management.
  • Maintain and update the NBI and NTI, recommending actions for improvements and corrections.
  • Provide technical assistance in improving inspection data quality in the NBI and NTI to support bridge management.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship and eligibility for consideration.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to GS-13 level, including structural engineering principles for bridge and tunnel design, construction, inspection, management, and preservation.
  • Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures for program performance and funding related to highway structures.
  • Strong communication skills to advise and consult with partners and stakeholders regarding bridge and tunnel programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Experience with grants management and federal funding processes.
  • Knowledge of transportation engineering principles and practices.
