About the position

You will function as a Civil Engineer (Structural) with the Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District, Engineering and Construction Division.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of structural engineering features pertinent to the new construction and/or modification of navigation locks and dams, flood control and local protection projects and appurtenant features.
  • Apply loads to structural members and performs stability and flotation analysis to obtain resultant stresses such as shear, tension, compression or torsion on the structure.
  • Prepare sketches showing dimensions, steel sizes and spacing, and notes required to prepare contract drawings pertaining to structural design.
  • Prepare or coordinate preparation of finished Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) drawings on structural items for use in contract drawings.
  • Make comparative cost estimates as an aid in choosing between two or more alternative designs.
  • Coordinate the engineering data resulting from preceding work and provides technical assistance in the preparation of preliminary designs and estimates.
  • Review incoming correspondence, regulations, and directives to keep abreast of new policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Specialized experience for GS-07: One year of specialized experience performing engineering work such as searching technical reports and applying basic formulas to routine calculations.
  • Specialized experience for GS-09: One year of specialized experience preparing portions of conventional engineering plans, designs, and/or design specifications.
  • Specialized experience for GS-11: One year of specialized experience providing developing structural designs and preparing design engineering documents.
  • Education or combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for the position.
