About the position

You will function as a Civil Engineer (Structural) with the Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District, Engineering and Construction Division. This position involves performing a wide variety of structural engineering features pertinent to the new construction and/or modification of navigation locks and dams, flood control and local protection projects and appurtenant features. You will apply loads to structural members and perform stability and flotation analysis to obtain resultant stresses such as shear, tension, compression or torsion on the structure. Additionally, you will prepare sketches showing dimensions, steel sizes and spacing, and notes required to prepare contract drawings pertaining to structural design.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of structural engineering features pertinent to the new construction and/or modification of navigation locks and dams, flood control and local protection projects and appurtenant features.
  • Apply loads to structural members and perform stability and flotation analysis to obtain resultant stresses such as shear, tension, compression or torsion on the structure.
  • Prepare sketches showing dimensions, steel sizes and spacing, and notes required to prepare contract drawings pertaining to structural design.
  • Prepare or coordinate preparation of finished Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) drawings on structural items for use in contract drawings.
  • Make comparative cost estimates as an aid in choosing between two or more alternative designs.
  • Coordinate the engineering data resulting from preceding work and provide technical assistance in the preparation of preliminary designs and estimates.
  • Review incoming correspondence, regulations, and directives to keep abreast of new policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Basic education requirement: Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Specialized experience or education is required for GS-7, GS-9, and GS-11 levels.

  • Professional registration or licensure as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Membership in a national scholastic honor society.
