About the position

The Department of Transportation is seeking a Civil Engineer to enhance highway safety and traffic flow through the supervision of engineering plans for construction and maintenance projects. This role involves evaluating design plans, conducting field inspections, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure compliance with traffic signal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate design plans created by in-house staff and consultants using engineering judgment.
  • Review line-of-sight calculations, device placement, and structure details.
  • Gather information on roadway geometry, operations, road users, and environmental factors.
  • Determine appropriate approaches for highway safety and mobility improvements.
  • Conduct field inspections and testing on traffic signal installations.
  • Assess permanent and temporary traffic control measures, including work zones and incident management.
  • Engage with municipalities through meetings, electronic communication, and written reports to ensure compliance with traffic signal permits.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program; or
  • Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate; or
  • Four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, an Engineer-in-Training certificate, and an associate degree in civil engineering technology; or
  • One year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
