About the position

The Civil Engineer position at a large utility company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a contract role that offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $64.93 to $69.93. This position is focused on providing leadership and technical expertise for natural gas capital projects, particularly in civil and structural design, procurement, and project oversight. The role requires frequent site visits to compressor facilities, ensuring that the engineer is actively involved in the practical aspects of the projects. The contract is estimated to last for 12 months, with the possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent position. In this role, the Civil Engineer will be responsible for overseeing various aspects of gas distribution, transmission, city gates/regulator stations, compression, and storage facilities. The engineer will support capital upgrade projects specifically at the Muskegon River Compressor Station and Overisel Compressor Station. Collaboration is key, as the engineer will work closely with a multidisciplinary project team that includes project engineers, project managers, and operations personnel. This collaborative environment is essential for identifying and scoping civil engineering design and construction requirements for the projects. Additionally, the Civil Engineer will be tasked with procuring engineering services through contracts and providing engineering reviews and technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle. This position requires a strong working knowledge in civil and structural design, with expertise in areas such as site design, stormwater management, pre-engineered metal building design, foundation design, structural steel design, and environmental permitting. The ideal candidate will also have experience in coordinating and developing contract documents, including engineering drawings and technical specifications, and will be familiar with relevant Civil/Structural codes such as IBC/MBC, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, AWS D1.1, and ASCE 7.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering leadership for natural gas capital projects.
  • Focus on gas distribution, transmission, city gates/regulator stations, compression, and storage facilities.
  • Support capital upgrade projects at Muskegon River Compressor Station and Overisel Compressor Station.
  • Collaborate with multidiscipline project team including project engineers, project managers, and operations.
  • Identify and scope civil engineering design and construction requirements for projects.
  • Procure engineering services through contracts.
  • Offer engineering review and technical leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Engineering degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer preferred.
  • Working knowledge in civil and structural design.
  • Expertise in site design, stormwater management, pre-engineered metal building design, foundation design, structural steel design, and environmental permitting.
  • Experience in coordinating and developing contract documents, including engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with Civil/Structural codes such as IBC/MBC, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, AWS D1.1, and ASCE 7.
  • 1 year of experience with gas compressor stations required.
  • 2 years of construction experience required.
  • 3 years of engineering experience required.
