About the position

The Civil Engineer position serves as the lead civil reviewer for the Portland District assigned to Department of Veteran Affairs mega projects. This role is critical in ensuring that all civil design projects meet established criteria, sound engineering principles, standard practices, and applicable building codes. The engineer will coordinate the civil Design Quality Assurance Reviews of Architect-Engineer (A-E) and Design-Build (DB) Contractor designs executed by the Portland District. This includes providing expert advice on designs and during the construction phase of projects, ensuring that all aspects of the engineering work are compliant and of high quality. In addition to the review and advisory responsibilities, the Civil Engineer will maintain an awareness of current advances in civil engineering. This knowledge will be incorporated into the design review process, ensuring that the projects benefit from the latest technical advances in the field. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to excellence in engineering practices, as the engineer will be responsible for the integrity and safety of the projects undertaken by the department. The role also involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including contractors, project managers, and other engineering professionals, to ensure that all project requirements are met efficiently and effectively. The Civil Engineer will play a key role in the planning and execution of projects, contributing to the overall success of the Department of Veteran Affairs' infrastructure initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead civil reviewer for Portland District assigned Department of Veteran Affairs mega projects.
  • Coordinate the civil Design Quality Assurance Reviews of A-E and DB Contractor designs executed by Portland District.
  • Ensure designs are in compliance with established criteria, sound engineering principles, standard practices, and applicable building codes.
  • Provide expert advice on designs as well as during the construction phase of projects.
  • Maintain awareness of current advances in civil engineering and incorporate knowledge of technical advances when reviewing designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education.
  • Current and valid Professional Engineer (PE) License is required.
  • One year of specialized experience in planning and designing civil engineering hospital/medical/laboratory or other vertical structure design features of new construction, renovation, or improvement projects.
  • Experience reviewing design calculations, analyses, and drawings/specifications.

Nice-to-haves
