About the position

The Civil Engineer position within the Department of Agriculture serves as a Forest Engineer for the Flathead National Forest, located in Kalispell, MT. This role involves overseeing engineering projects related to natural resource development, providing expert advice on engineering policies, and managing a team of subordinate staff. The position requires a strong background in civil engineering and the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of engineering programs.

Responsibilities

  • Determine the need for, initiate, and formulate policy, practices, procedures, and methods related to areas of responsibility for the guidance of subordinate staff.
  • Negotiate settlement of differences for all construction contracts under engineering and recommend a basis for satisfactory settlements to the contracting officer.
  • Recommend changes in program direction based on progress toward goals and objectives and other influencing factors.
  • Participate with other staff officers and District Rangers as a team member representing engineering to arrive at recommendations for engineering programs and objectives.
  • Provide expert advice about the implementation of proposed policies, plans, and programs.
  • Establish and communicate guidelines and performance requirements to employees; conduct formal performance reviews.
  • Perform administrative and human resources management functions for the unit, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Hears and resolves employee complaints and effects minor disciplinary measures.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program or equivalent education and experience.
  • Must possess specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.
  • Must have experience in providing professional engineering input into interdisciplinary planning processes for natural resource development activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional registration or licensure as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
