About the position

The Civil Engineer will be responsible for preparing site development plans and specifications for commercial and industrial sites, ensuring compliance with client requirements and local ordinances. This role involves collaboration with various disciplines to address site issues that may affect architectural development and building systems. The Civil Engineer will also develop criteria for procuring sub-consultant services, ensuring that all aspects of the project are aligned with the overall goals and standards set by the company and the client. In this position, the Civil Engineer will review and establish project scope, civil budget, design approach, and applicable constraints in collaboration with the department manager, Project Manager, and client. They will prepare feasibility studies and civil cost estimates, formulate designs for civil systems including underground utilities, paving, grading, and drainage for small to medium-sized projects, and develop site layouts in accordance with zoning and other applicable ordinances. The role also includes editing or writing project specifications, evaluating design options, and monitoring project budgets and schedules to ensure that goals are met. The Civil Engineer will prepare working drawings for construction using CAD software, conduct field measurements and survey verifications, and review drawings for quality and compliance with standards. They will also review product submittals for conformance with contract documents and prepare project file updates and correspondence. Additionally, the Civil Engineer will attend meetings with governmental agencies to obtain site plan approvals and coordinate projects with other disciplines to resolve any site or building system conflicts. Mentoring less experienced staff and developing cost and quantity estimates are also key responsibilities of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Review and/or establish project scope, civil budget, design approach and applicable constraints with department manager, Project Manager, and client as appropriate.
  • Prepare feasibility studies and civil cost estimates.
  • Formulate design of civil systems including underground utilities, paving, grading, and drainage for small to medium sized projects.
  • Develop site layout(s) in accordance with zoning and other applicable ordinances and requirements.
  • Edit or write project specifications.
  • Evaluate design options for consideration by Project Manager and/or client.
  • Monitor project budgets and schedules. Adjust work efforts as required to meet budget and schedule goals.
  • Prepare working drawings for construction on CAD with support from department staff when applicable.
  • Conduct field measuring and/or survey verification at project site. Perform basic topographic surveying for minor projects.
  • Review drawings for omissions, errors, overall quality, content accuracy, and compliance with standards and codes.
  • Review product submittals (shop drawings) for conformance with contract documents, specify action necessary for compliance.
  • Prepare project file updates, transmittals, letters, reports, and other project correspondence.
  • Assist with checking, standards review, and maintenance of master specifications.
  • With Project Manager, attend meetings with governmental agencies as required for obtaining site plan approval.
  • Coordinate project with other disciplines and advise of site/building system conflicts.
  • Prepare site plan submittal documents in accordance with local requirements.
  • Visit construction site to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents.
  • Develop and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Develop cost and quantity estimates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related degree
  • Professional Registration required
  • 5+ years of related experience in site design and civil engineering
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Bluebeam
  • Knowledge in Infraworks and BIM 360 a bonus
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental laws
  • Intermediate level proficiency in hydraulic and hydrology system design
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong attention to detail
