As the Geotechnical Drill Crew Chief with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, you will play a crucial role in overseeing drill crews that perform subsurface explorations to collect soil information essential for the design and construction of transportation facilities across South Dakota. This full-time position requires you to coordinate and manage the activities of the drill crews assigned to the Geotechnical Engineering Activity. Your responsibilities will include planning and preparing for subsurface explorations, directing and scheduling the maintenance and repair of drill rigs and transport vehicles, and managing the inventory of tooling, equipment, and supplies necessary for geotechnical drilling activities. The position involves statewide travel from Monday through Thursday, year-round, and work assignments are often conducted outdoors in various weather conditions and near highway traffic. To be successful in this role, you must possess a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver license (CDL) within 120 days of your hire date. Additionally, you will be subject to various drug and alcohol testing protocols as part of your employment requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience in geotechnical subsurface investigations and a solid understanding of South Dakota's geology and surficial soils, as well as the principles and practices of conducting geotechnical investigations.
