About the position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Civil/Geotechnical Engineer for our Reno, NV office. Be involved in projects with our US Mine Waste Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work as a part of a regional team on challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects. You will be working within our mine waste team on civil and geotechnical engineering projects for the mining industry, with opportunities to work on projects in other industries. Your responsibilities will include performing engineering tasks such as site and material characterization, facility design including grading, storage capacity, and construction quantity evaluations, slope stability, seepage, consolidation, liner system, and settlement analyses. You will also be involved in permafrost soils and cold region related engineering analyses, design, and thermal modeling, as well as surface water management facility design and analysis. In addition, you will be preparing portions of technical reports that document field and laboratory investigations, engineering analyses, and facility designs. Assisting with the preparation of project design packages including technical drawings, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates will also be part of your role. You will perform domestic and international field assignments, such as geotechnical investigations and construction monitoring, and work with cross-functional teams in executing project work. Completing training on assigned tasks and exercising responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, while adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures, will be essential. You will also perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Working within our mine waste team on civil and geotechnical engineering projects for the mining industry.
  • Performing engineering tasks such as site and material characterization.

  • Conducting slope stability, seepage, consolidation, liner system, and settlement analyses.
  • Performing permafrost soils and cold region related engineering analyses, design, and thermal modeling.
  • Designing and analyzing surface water management facilities.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or an equivalent field of study.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or the ability to complete the exam within 6 months of start date.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to complete engineering calculations and analyses.
  • Ability to work both independently and on teams.
  • Comfortable working in remote settings.
  • Participating in and promoting a safety-first culture.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
