About the position

Timmons Group is seeking a Civil Project Engineer II/III - Traffic Analysis and Planning candidate for our Traffic Analysis and Planning Group located in our Charlottesville, VA office. This position is integral to our Infrastructure Engineering division and involves a variety of responsibilities focused on traffic analysis and planning. The successful candidate will engage in operational analysis, corridor studies, and traffic studies, contributing to innovative intersection implementations, traffic calming measures, and safety analyses. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of traffic dynamics and the ability to apply engineering principles to real-world scenarios. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting bicycle, pedestrian, and multi-modal feasibility studies, as well as their design and implementation. You will utilize engineering formulas and computer software to perform calculations and solve complex problems. Research and report writing are also key components of the job, as you will need to summarize findings objectively for project completion. Additionally, you will assist in preparing engineering planning schedules and cost estimates, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget. Field observation, inspection, and data collection duties are essential to this role, allowing you to gather firsthand information that informs your analyses. Effective communication is crucial, as you will interact with client staff and collaborate with internal design teams. You will also be responsible for conveying results and recommendations to the general public, ensuring transparency and understanding of the projects you work on.

Responsibilities

  • Complete operational analysis, corridor studies, traffic studies, innovative intersection implementation, traffic calming, and safety analysis.
  • Conduct bicycle/pedestrian/multi-modal feasibility, analysis, design, and implementation.
  • Perform calculations using engineering formulas and skills and/or utilize computers to solve problems.
  • Conduct research and write objective summary reports for project work completion.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering planning schedules and cost estimates.
  • Complete field observation, inspection, and data collection duties.
  • Communicate with client staff and internal design team.
  • Communicate results/recommendations to the general public.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
  • Between two and six years of experience in Transportation / Traffic Engineering and Planning.
  • Proficiency in Synchro/SIDRA/HCS is essential.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Analyses, Planning Studies, Traffic Safety, Traffic Forecasting, Traffic Signal Design, ITS Design, and/or Traffic Signal Timing is preferred.
  • Experience with bicycle/pedestrian/multi-modal projects is preferred.
  • Basic CAD and/or GIS knowledge is preferred.
  • Experience working with DOT and/or localities is preferred.
  • PE/EIT certification is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with innovative intersection implementation.
  • Knowledge of traffic calming measures.
  • Experience in safety analysis related to traffic engineering.
