About the position

As a Civil Project Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in providing consulting engineering services to municipalities, state agencies, and private clients, focusing on vehicular, pedestrian, and railroad bridge projects. Our firm prides itself on designing structures and solutions that not only meet the needs of our clients but also enhance the communities we serve. You will be involved in various aspects of bridge engineering, including the Connecticut State & Federal Local Bridge Program, Accelerated Bridge Construction, and providing construction support and design services during construction. In this position, you will leverage your extensive experience in civil engineering to lead a team of engineers, providing vision, expertise, and guidance. You will be responsible for developing project scopes and proposals, ensuring compliance with ConnDOT and FHWA standards, and overseeing the administrative development of bridge rehabilitation measures. Your role will also involve technical resolution of design issues, conducting field investigations, and maintaining constant communication with other engineering and planning units. You will have the opportunity to present study reports and technical analyses, review consultant milestone submissions, and implement QA/QC procedures. Additionally, you will mentor and guide junior engineers, participate in recruitment and staff retention efforts, and contribute to strategic planning and succession initiatives. Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering vision, expertise, and guidance to a staff of 20.
  • Develop project scopes and proposals.
  • Oversee administrative development of bridge rehabilitation measures to ensure compliance with ConnDOT and FHWA standards.
  • Resolve technical design issues, including performing field investigations.
  • Maintain constant communication with other engineering and planning units.
  • Present study reports and technical analyses.
  • Review consultant milestone PS&E submissions.
  • Implement QA/QC procedures.
  • Develop various contract documents.
  • Guide and mentor engineers in performing engineering tasks.
  • Participate in recruitment, hiring, development, and staff retention.
  • Benchmark staff development, performance, and compensation reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or equivalent.
  • Connecticut Professional Engineer License (P.E.) or ability to obtain.
  • 8-15+ years of professional engineering experience, with a minimum of five years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Excellent conflict resolution and management skills.
  • Expertise in assessing bridge conditions and prescribing rehabilitation measures.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a team atmosphere.
  • Experience with developing project scopes and proposals.
  • Familiarity with working with the State Department of Transportation and local town administrations.
  • Knowledge of ConnDOT Design Manual standards, specifications, procedures, and State statutes.
  • Strong communication skills, adaptable to various audiences.
  • Highly organized with the ability to share information effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and Bluebeam.
  • Familiarity with ConnDOT software including DDE, COMPASS, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, Open Bridge Modeler, AASHTOWare Bridge Rating, Midas Civil, and InfoTech Estimator.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Bridge/Structures, Highway Design, Water Resources, Environmental Permitting, Load Rating, Cost Estimating, Construction Staging/Sequencing, and Accelerated Bridge Construction Techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with CTDOT and FHWA policies and procedures.
