About the position

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Civil/Site team in Lansing, MI! We engage with our clients as a strategic partner providing complete civil and site consulting and engineering services to both public and private clients. This partnership begins with comprehensive site feasibility evaluations as part of the due diligence process to identify potential pitfalls and implement strategies to overcome them. We have extensive experience in traditional residential development as well as commercial project types including office, retail, financial, educational, restaurant, mixed-use, healthcare, landfill, energy, industrial, and warehouse. As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for designing land development projects using Civil 3D, which includes site, grading, and utilities. You will review municipal zoning and land development ordinances and applicable agency regulations to determine land development limitations for the property. Your role will also involve site investigation and due diligence, which includes the review of ordinances, utility service research, outside agency regulations, and site visits to establish comprehensive development guidelines. You will prepare concept drawings based on the client's development objectives and conclusions of due diligence, coordinating with AutoCAD draftsmen. In this position, you will take a leadership role in the review and design of Stormwater Management & Stormwater Conveyance Systems, utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydrology design software. You will be expected to prepare pipe sizing calculations for stormwater conveyance systems, evaluate surface runoff coefficients, invert, slope, velocity, and hydraulic grade line using the Rational Method & Manning's Equation, and ensure compliance with stormwater management design regulations. Additionally, you will be involved in grading design, subdivision and site plan design, utility systems design, soil erosion & sediment control design, and preparation of construction cost estimates. There is also potential for you to take an active leadership role and guide junior staff while working closely with the Infrastructure department on utility coordination and municipal utility design for complex highway and bridge projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design land development projects using Civil 3D including site, grading, and utilities.
  • Review municipal zoning and land development ordinances and applicable agency regulations to determine land development limitations for the property.
  • Conduct site investigation and due diligence including the review of ordinances, utility service research, outside agency regulations, and site visits to establish comprehensive development guidelines.
  • Prepare concept drawings based on client's development objectives and conclusions of due diligence, coordinating with AutoCAD draftsmen.
  • Lead the review and design of Stormwater Management & Stormwater Conveyance Systems using AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydrology design software.
  • Prepare pipe sizing calculations for stormwater conveyance systems including drainage area maps.
  • Evaluate surface runoff coefficients, invert, slope, velocity & hydraulic grade line using the Rational Method & Manning's Equation.
  • Ensure compliance with stormwater management design regulations.
  • Conduct grading design to achieve value engineering through earthwork analysis and ensure site safety with appropriate design slopes.
  • Design subdivision and site plans, including layout.
  • Design utility systems including stormwater conveyance, sanitary sewer service, pump station design, water, gas, and telephone service, resolving vertical and horizontal utility conflicts.
  • Design soil erosion & sediment control including stability calculations, best management practices, swale design, spillway design, and construction sequence determination.
  • Prepare construction cost estimates based on site plan drawings for bonding and client purposes.
  • Guide junior staff and take an active leadership role as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Infrastructure department for utility coordination and municipal utility design for complex highway and bridge projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering is required.
  • 4+ years of related civil/site experience is required.
  • PE license or working towards licensure is preferred.
  • Demonstrated Civil 3D skills with the ability to design site layouts from concept through completion.
  • Experience with MicroStation, HydroCAD, WaterCAD, HEC-HMS/-RAS, OpenRoads, and InRoads is a plus.
  • Prior experience with business development, project management, client facing, or estimating costs is a plus.
  • Proficiency in technical skills in storm water management, hydraulics, hydrological analysis, grading and other site development related designs.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
