About the position

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Civil Structural CAD Designer to join our Seattle or Federal Way office. As part of the CAD Group, the Civil Structural CAD Designer will design and draft detailed drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D for use in planning, permitting, and construction of civil/structural infrastructure projects that shape our coastlines, harbors, and rivers, as well as transportation projects associated with the movement of freight. The role encompasses six key areas of practice: Ports & Harbors; coastal, environmental & water resources; urban waterfronts & marinas; transportation, bridges & rail; inspection & rehabilitation; and energy. The Civil Structural CAD Designer will transform initial rough designs and sketches into finished graphics and construction documents. This position requires interaction and coordination with all involved parties, including engineering teams, construction crews, clients, subcontractors, and government agencies. The designer will assist the CAD Manager with designs for site development and transportation projects, draft detailed drawings of various structures, compute volume calculations for dredging and upland site development projects, and review engineering drawings to ensure adherence to established CAD standards. Additionally, the designer will perform 2D and 3D CADD modeling, provide mentoring and training to other CADD staff, and manage CADD personnel to ensure accountability in project work. Responsibilities

  • Transform initial rough designs/sketches and redlines/mark-ups into finished graphics/construction documents.
  • Interact and coordinate with all involved parties (engineering, sampling group, construction, clients, subcontractors, government agencies, etc.).
  • Assist the CAD Manager with designs for site development & transportation projects.
  • Draft detail drawings of cargo/port/bulk terminals, breakwaters, marinas, wharfs, bulkhead walls, piers, bridges, sound walls, ferry terminals, hydraulic structures, and shoreline construction.
  • Compute volumes calculations for dredging and upland site development projects.
  • Review engineering drawings to ensure adherence to established CAD standards.
  • Perform 2D & 3D CADD modelling.
  • Provide mentoring and training to other CADD staff.
  • Perform design constructability reviews.
  • Manage CADD personnel, schedule & distribute work and ensure time spent on projects is accountable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or Associate degree in Engineering Technology or comparable/related field.
  • 6 to 10 years of previous AEC design experience.
  • Working knowledge of civil site development (e.g. grading, surfaces, volume calculations, sections, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, alignments and quantity take-offs).
  • Proven work experience with Autodesk Civil 3D.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail is a must.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel advanced knowledge required).
  • Ability to introduce new ideas and CAD routines to enhance and improve day-to-day operations.
  • Understanding and application of CAD standards.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering design principles and construction methods.
  • Good analytical thinking, numeracy, computer, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of structural steel materials (e.g. W, S & M shapes; channels; angles; pipe piles, etc.).
  • Creative flair and the ability to meet deadlines while performing under pressure.
