About the position

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer I to support operations at the Device Assembly Facility (DAF) located within the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The DAF is a Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility that plays a crucial role in supporting the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) through various activities including subcritical experiments, nuclear material management, and stockpile surveillance. This position is integral to ensuring the operational readiness of facility systems and providing technical support to line management safety responsibilities. The successful candidate will report directly to the DAF Engineering Manager and will be responsible for maintaining cognizance of assigned facility systems, validating physical configurations, and updating system documents for Configuration Management. In this role, the engineer will act as a subject matter expert for assigned systems, conducting in-service inspections and technical surveillance requirement testing. The engineer will also contribute to problem-solving efforts related to assignment issues, participate in developing field programs and designs, and assist in defining specifications for procurements. The position requires a strong understanding of engineering principles, codes, and standards, as well as the ability to coordinate work within their discipline on moderately complex projects. The engineer will also be expected to monitor the work of skilled technicians and support personnel, ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality regulations. Responsibilities

  • Support the maintenance of overall cognizance of assigned facility systems.
  • Provide systems engineering support for operations and maintenance.
  • Validate physical configuration of assigned systems.
  • Maintain and update system documents for Configuration Management.
  • Understand the functions and performance criteria for assigned systems per the Safety Basis.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for assigned systems.
  • Conduct or oversee the In-service-Inspections and Technical Surveillance Requirement testing of assigned systems.
  • Contribute to solutions of assignment-related problems and issues with a limited scope and basic complexity.
  • Participate in developing field programs and designs using pre-determined principles and practices.
  • Contribute to designs, strategies, reports, and technical proposals.
  • Perform design and technical analysis activities using prescribed codes and standards, computer software, and best management practices.
  • Assist in defining specifications for procurements and initiate purchase requests.
  • Work with outside vendors as required obtaining relevant information.
  • Develop a working knowledge of codes and standards of other disciplines.
  • Coordinate work within their discipline on moderately complex projects.
  • Monitor work of and provide guidance to skilled technicians and other support personnel.
  • Accept individual responsibility and accountability for environment, safety, health, and quality processes.
  • Comply with established regulations and procedures for environment, safety, health, and quality.
  • Promptly correct or report any hazard or potential hazard to supervision.
  • Participate in and embrace MSTS environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical engineering degrees.
  • Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) for Architects.
  • Professional Engineer license is preferred.
  • Skill building experience demonstrating deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge.
  • Demonstrated desire to learn and innovate.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation & control, electrical, mechanical, or electromechanical components.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong time-management skills and well-organized work habits.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and technical documents.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
