About the position

The Civil Structural Engineer (Forensics) position at S-E-A, Ltd. involves conducting forensic investigations to analyze structural failures across various types of properties. The role requires a strong understanding of engineering principles to determine the causes of failures and to provide expert testimony when necessary. The engineer will engage in client relations, prepare detailed reports, and deliver presentations, all while maintaining a commitment to professional development and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations and analyze failures involving all types of structures and construction problems including residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
  • Determine the cause, origin, and extent of structural failures, water intrusions, construction defects, and building system failures.
  • Perform structural assessments, site evaluations, vibration analysis, and evaluations of construction site accidents and building egress accidents.
  • Analyze failures in buildings and other infrastructure systems by conducting site visits and applying engineering principles and practices in accordance with codes and industry standards.
  • Conduct unbiased investigations for various types of clients.
  • Responsible for retention and development of client relations.
  • Prepare oral and written reports in layman's terms that document causes of failure, extent of loss, and recommended remediation.
  • Deliver professional presentations, develop client relationships, and promote self to client groups.
  • Support conclusions by providing appropriate expert testimony in legal proceedings.
  • Integrate constructive feedback into job performance.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required; Master's degree is a plus.
  • Three to five years of civil/structural experience.
  • P.E. (Professional Engineer) registration required through testing or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Strong writing skills are essential.
  • Public speaking experience is a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Experience in forensic engineering or related fields.
