About the position

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to join our Electrical Controls and Structural Engineering department. This position is based at our Materials and Fuels Complex, where we operate on a 4x10 schedule, allowing for every Friday off. The successful candidate will report directly to the manager of Electrical Controls and Structural Engineering. As a leading national laboratory for the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) sector, INL plays a pivotal role in advancing nuclear research, development, and demonstration capabilities. The Materials and Fuels Complex is uniquely equipped with personnel, facilities, and infrastructure that enable comprehensive research and development of nuclear fuels, encompassing everything from fuel design and fabrication to post-irradiation analysis. In this role, you will apply engineering principles to the planning, design, and construction of various structures, including environmental control systems, transportation facilities, tunnels, buildings, and bridges. You will be responsible for analyzing systems, structures, and components in Nuclear facilities and Radiological Facilities, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. Your expertise will guide the oversight of civil/structural engineering projects, leveraging your construction knowledge and experience in structural steel and concrete work. You will also develop design work packages, inspection plans, and testing instructions, while mentoring junior engineering staff to enhance their technical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering principles for the planning, design, and construction of environmental control, natural resource development, transportation facilities, tunnels, buildings, bridges, and other structures.
  • Provide analysis for systems, structures, and components in Category 1, 2, and 3 Nuclear facilities and Radiological Facilities.
  • Direct or participate in planning, designing, or reviewing plans for the erection of structures requiring stress analysis.
  • Provide oversight of civil/structural engineering projects using construction expertise, structural steel and concrete work experience, and structural analysis.
  • Design structures to meet estimated load requirements, computing size, shape, strength, and type of structural members, or perform structural analysis of plans and structures prepared by private engineers.
  • Develop design work packages to include engineering design schedules and issue formal work packages.
  • Confirm compliance with applicable codes and standards, develop acceptance criteria, inspection plans, and test plans.
  • Develop and issue installation and testing instructions.
  • Create relevant documentation including engineering design files (EDF), technical and functional design requirements (TFR), system design descriptions (SDD), and engineering calculation and analysis reports (ECAR).
  • Inspect existing projects and recommend repair and replacement of defective members or rebuilding of entire structures, applying engineering principles to monitor and evaluate condition and operational performance of plant systems related to Civil/Structural engineering.
  • Recommend maintenance standards and procedures, identify vendor data, replacement, and spare parts.
  • Provide sound "in the field" guidance on emergent civil/structural engineering issues.
  • Act as spokesperson for main civil/structural engineering matters about policies, plans, and goals, communicating with customers to understand their requirements and identify design goals.
  • Enhance technical/professional skills of junior engineering staff through mentoring.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Relevant experience determined by level, including a background in designing, leading, or overseeing structural engineering work with extensive field experience and construction expertise; structural steel and concrete work; and structural analysis and developing structural designs.
  • For Level 3: Bachelor's and 5 years of experience, Master's and 2 years of experience, or PhD and 2 years of experience.
  • For Level 4: Bachelor's and 9 years of experience, Master's and 6 years of experience, or PhD and 4 years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
