About the position

GAI Consultants, Inc is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to work within our Transportation Business Unit. The successful candidate will thrive in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment, utilizing their related work experience to develop professionally into a well-rounded engineer capable of growth in today's global environment. This position involves designing and preparing plans and specifications for various transportation structures, including highway and railroad bridges, retaining walls, box culverts, and other miscellaneous structures, adhering to AASHTO and FDOT requirements. As part of a team or as a task lead, the engineer will work under moderate supervision to ensure project budgets and schedules are met. The role includes providing leadership, direction, mentorship, and technical guidance to less experienced staff, ensuring the delivery of quality technical services. The engineer will also monitor and enforce compliance with established quality control standards and participate in occasional site visits in an outdoor environment. The ideal candidate will independently apply extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices, modify accepted theories to complete assignments, and act in responsible charge of projects. They will lead tasks and projects of moderately complex scopes, develop plans, specifications, and other project documents, and analyze complex engineering projects to determine design requirements, uncertainties, and constraints. Acknowledging and applying concepts of sustainability to engineering projects is also a key aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prepare plans and specifications for transportation structures, including highway and railroad bridges, retaining walls, and box culverts per AASHTO and FDOT requirements.
  • Perform work as part of a team or as a task lead, ensuring adherence to project budget and schedule under moderate supervision.
  • Provide leadership, direction, mentorship, and technical guidance to less experienced staff to ensure quality technical services.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with established quality control standards.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Participate in occasional site visits in an outdoor environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering; a Master of Science in Structures is preferred.
  • Professional Engineering Licensure (PE) in Florida.
  • 5-10 years of engineering experience on a variety of bridge types (structural steel, prestressed and cast-in-place concrete).
  • Experience with FDOT standards, specifications, and design manuals.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design programs for bridge design.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and Open Bridge Modeler.

Nice-to-haves

  • Reciprocity in multiple states for Professional Engineer (P.E.) License.
  • Experience with advanced engineering software and tools.
