About the position

WSP is seeking a Civil Transmission Lines Design Engineer to join their Energy Team in Buffalo, NY, with consideration for other locations. This role involves supporting technical staff and project managers in the design, permitting, and construction of transmission lines, ensuring high-quality deliverables that meet industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering duties from conceptual stages of projects through construction.
  • Conduct structural analysis, foundation design, wire sag and tension analysis, and develop design criteria and specifications for transmission line design.
  • Engage in civil site design including earthwork, stabilization, and station layouts.
  • Procure materials, estimate project costs, and conduct quality control reviews.
  • Collaborate with the drafting department to prepare drawings and specifications for various deliverables.
  • Regularly communicate with clients, material vendors, and sub-contractors.
  • Travel for project site visits and field reviews.
  • Support business development initiatives in the transmission line market.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work and permitting.
  • Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • 1-3 years of transmission line design experience, 69kV to 500kV.
  • Solid working knowledge of the PLS-CADD suite of design software tools.
  • Working knowledge of LPILE, MFAD, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, MicroStation.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards: NESC, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE.
  • Proficiency in writing and providing support documentation for engineering calculations.
  • Experienced user of MS Office applications.
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Analytical mindset with sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification, with plans to become licensed based on state requirements.
  • Prior design experience.
  • Active participation in local professional practice organizations.
