About the position

The Transmission Line Engineer internship at Kiewit Power Engineering is designed for students pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. Interns will assist in engineering and design duties, applying engineering principles to support various substation, transmission, and distribution projects across the country. This role offers hands-on experience in a team of specialized design professionals, focusing on projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV.

Responsibilities

  • Create design documents and drawings for projects, including transmission line design criteria for PLS-CADD.
  • Generate bills of materials and apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Use engineering application software to build, modify, and analyze transmission line, pole, and tower models within PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS TOWER.
  • Develop construction assembly drawings, material specifications, and structure loading packages for vendor submittals.
  • Review project schedules and collaborate with project engineers to ensure timely project completion.
  • Utilize the document management system effectively.
  • Apply corporate standard engineering practices in all tasks.
  • Assist in communication and coordination of project activities with project engineers and customer representatives.
  • Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of work and report potential project-related issues.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Basic knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, per-unit mathematics, and symmetrical components.
  • Understanding of design documents and engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Proficiency in common word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate with co-workers, vendors, and clients.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with engineering application software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS TOWER.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and techniques.
