About the position

The Special Education Instructional Aide II assists certificated teachers in the instruction, supervision, training, and personal care needs of individual or groups of students. This role involves performing a variety of instructional support activities and related duties to maintain an effective learning environment. The position requires a high degree of positive contact with both students and certificated staff, and assignments may be part of a Resource Specialist Program (RSP), within a Special Day Class (SDC), or providing support in a regular education environment. Under the supervision of a credentialed school nurse, the aide provides specialized health care procedures to specific disabled students.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teacher(s) in instructing individuals and/or small groups of students in various learning situations.
  • Assist certificated teacher(s) in implementing curriculum for assigned area(s) of instruction.
  • Supervise students to maintain an effective learning environment.
  • Organize assigned learning and/or instructional environments.
  • Provide feedback to develop positive self-esteem of students.
  • Assist students in personal care such as toileting, dressing, grooming, and eating.
  • Prepare materials for use in instructional activities.
  • Provide relevant feedback and information on student progress.
  • Participate in parent/family meetings as assigned.
  • Administer and score tests, daily assignments, and homework.
  • Maintain informational and operational records and files.
  • Monitor and assist students while using equipment.
  • Take daily attendance and prepare appropriate attendance forms.
  • Contact parents regarding meetings and appointment scheduling.
  • Escort students to and from various school areas.
  • Assist in monitoring and supervising students during lunch, recess, and field trips.
  • Perform clerical tasks as assigned.
  • Supervise the preparation and serving of snacks and meals.
  • Provide First Aid in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Assist with standardized testing under supervision.
  • Assist certificated staff with operating a special education classroom.
  • Support students' instructional goals based on Individual Educational Plans (I.E.P.).
  • Instruct/tutor individual or small groups of students using various learning strategies.
  • Modify curriculum for students mainstreamed into the regular classroom.
  • Provide appropriate individual and group interventions to redirect/modify behavior.
  • Assist in the transporting of students with special needs.
  • Assist students with the use of adaptive devices.
  • Assist with physical care of assigned special education students.
  • Provide medication to students as directed.
  • Physically restrain and/or remove students from the classroom when necessary.
  • Assist students with gross motor skills.
  • Assist with Community Based Instruction (CBI) and related forms.
  • Perform CPR as necessary.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of the general needs and behaviors of students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students.
  • Ability to learn methods and procedures to be followed in assigned instructional situations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to effectively supervise students in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate classroom/program records and files.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to operate standard office and instructional equipment.
  • Ability to type accurately at a required rate.
  • Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of basic First Aid.
  • Knowledge of the special needs of students with disabilities.
  • Ability to recognize changes in student behavior and appearance.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain current First Aid and CPR certificates.
  • Basic signing skills desirable for nonverbal students.
