About the position

The Claims Specialist I position at Kirby Corporate Services LLC is primarily responsible for managing specific KMT and KDS claims, reporting directly to the Hull Claims Manager. This role involves a variety of tasks including reviewing events related to claims, managing auto claims across different organizations, and ensuring proper documentation and communication throughout the claims process. The specialist will utilize the Intelex system to document events such as grounding, self-damages, and loss of steering, ensuring that all claims are accurately created and maintained. Additionally, the position requires the management of claims related to minor spills, dock damages, and small hull claims, necessitating effective communication with the Claims Manager and Claims Director. The role also includes processing check requests for claims, following up on open claims, and coordinating with internal departments to track the status of various claims. The Claims Specialist will be responsible for setting up claim reserves, ensuring that captive reserves are established and updated as necessary. Monthly and quarterly reporting is a key component of this position, including the preparation of vessel assignment reports, navigational incident reports, and litigation hold updates. The specialist will also manage invoicing from various underwriters, ensuring that charges are accurately applied to the correct claims. In addition to these responsibilities, the Claims Specialist I will be involved in miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned by the Director of Litigation & Claims or the Claims Manager. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong communication skills, the ability to adapt to shifting priorities, and a positive attitude. A college degree or equivalent experience is preferred, along with proficiency in Microsoft applications and strong computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Review events such as grounding, self-damages, loss of steering and auto in Intelex, including KMT and KDS.
  • Document all events and create claims accordingly.
  • Manage auto claims for all organizations including accidents involving rental vehicles.
  • Report rental car claims to the appropriate underwriters and work with the claims adjuster to resolve them.
  • Manage claims on minor spills, dock damages, Coast Guard aids to navigation (ATONS), small dock claims, and small hull claims.
  • Communicate with Claims Manager and Claims Director regarding claims status.
  • Process check requests for claims.
  • Communicate with surveyors or third parties appointed by Kirby on its behalf.
  • Act as secondary backup for appointment of surveyors when Claims Manager is unavailable.
  • Set up claim reserves up to $25,000 and ensure captive reserves are established and updated.
  • Follow up on open claims and internal departments on the status of various claims.
  • Update Intelex with IT where necessary and process invoices.
  • Prepare monthly vessel assignment reports, navigational incident reports, and quarterly bordereau reports from P&I and other underwriters.
  • Manage invoicing from WC, Auto, and GL underwriters, ensuring charges are applied to the correct claims and posted.
  • Provide monthly litigation hold updates and manage miscellaneous projects as assigned.
