About the position

The Classification Compensation Manager 1 is a key role within the Human Resources Department, serving as an authority in compensation practices and policies. This position requires advanced expertise and is responsible for advising senior management on strategic initiatives related to compensation and retention. The manager oversees the work of others, develops city-wide compensation policies, and ensures internal equity in hiring practices. The role also involves analyzing compensation data, conducting market surveys, and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Advise senior management on best practices and strategic initiatives related to compensation, retention, and general HR practices.
  • Analyze compensation data, market trends, and complete compensation surveys for direct comparison.
  • Assist and perform in a confidential capacity to the Management team and administrative staff during collective bargaining.
  • Counsel and advise managers, supervisors, and employees on Classification and Compensation policies and procedures.
  • Create City-wide compensation policies and guidelines for competitive hiring and internal equity practices.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key customer representatives.
  • Evaluate existing systems and procedures and develop new and innovative approaches.
  • Examine position classifications and compare with workforce to ensure appropriate application.
  • Maintain current internal salary ranges and guide books, as well as industry data in compensation software.
  • Participate in the development of compensation metrics, reports, and tools to inform compensation program decisions.
  • Perform gap analyses to evaluate current systems and identify critical areas for change.
  • Prepare complex comprehensive statistical and narrative reports including classification analysis and compensation application.
  • Review and update current job descriptions.
  • Serve as a liaison between customer department(s) and the Classification and Compensation Department.
  • Update HRIS with current salary information.
  • Utilize market data sources to benchmark positions and conduct internal/external job analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in human resources, data analytics, project management, business, management, organizational development, or labor relations.
  • Four to five (4-5) years of human resources experience in components such as compensation, recruitment/staffing, benefits, labor relations, employee relations, training and development, and organizational development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Designations from the Society of Classification and Compensation, Management, International Personnel Management Association - HR - SHRM-CP/SCP Certification preferred.
