About the position

The Classification Officer is responsible for overseeing the intake process and maintaining the custody, care, and control of detainees/inmates at the facility. This role involves coordinating the receiving and booking of new arrivals, ensuring compliance with legal and procedural standards, and supervising detainee activities. The officer plays a critical role in maintaining safety and security within the facility while also managing records and reports related to detainee movements and counts.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the overall development, coordination, and maintenance of the intake process and master roster of newly arrived detainees/inmates.
  • Confirms the facility has legal authority to admit and accurately identifies incoming detainees/inmates.
  • Reviews admission documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Searches incoming detainee/inmate property for contraband and conducts shakedowns as necessary.
  • Confiscates contraband in accordance with facility and contracting agency policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates and monitors detainee/inmate movements, transfer records, and conducts counts.
  • Provides emergency response as required and conducts strip searches as needed.
  • Supervises detainees/inmates in the intake area and may provide supervision in other areas as needed.
  • Completes initial incoming detainee/inmate questionnaires and initiates a detainee/inmate file.
  • Coordinates tally of counts and advises responsible supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Develops and maintains clear records of counts and results.
  • Directs the work of the count room staff and other employees, including hiring, evaluating, and training.
  • Prepares reports and maintains daily logs as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting, with at least one year in a supervisory role.
  • Booking or intake experience preferred.
  • Must be mature, flexible, and able to command respect and confidence from detainees/inmates and staff.
  • Proven work history with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must be a United States citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.

Nice-to-haves

  • College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services, or a related field preferred.
