About the position

The Linux Systems Administrator at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is responsible for managing, configuring, and maintaining Linux-based systems in a classified environment. This role involves implementing security measures, providing technical support to end-users, troubleshooting system-related incidents, and developing comprehensive documentation. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure optimal performance, security, and availability of the IT infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, configure, and maintain Linux-based systems in a classified environment.
  • Implement security measures to protect classified information, including regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.
  • Provide technical support to end-users, assisting with system access and troubleshooting user issues.
  • Respond to and resolve system-related incidents and issues promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, including SOPs and troubleshooting guides.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in Linux systems administration.
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems (Red Hat, CentOS, or similar).
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies (VMware, KVM) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience scripting to automate manual efforts.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting layer 2 networks.
  • Experience applying STIGs to operating systems and applications.
  • Current DoD 8570 certification (Security+ or CISSP), or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Active Top Secret SCI w/poly security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Information Systems/Technology, Cybersecurity, or Computer Science.
  • Relevant certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Puppet, Ansible, Chef).
  • Experience working with Windows Servers and functions such as Group Policy and Active Directory.
