About the position

The position involves providing social, emotional, behavioral, and educational support for students with significant disabilities. The individual will be responsible for addressing the academic, physical, health, and safety needs of these students. Regular collaboration with teachers is essential to evaluate student progress and implement Individual Education Programs (IEPs). The role includes instructing students in various activities, monitoring their behavior in different school settings, and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment. Additionally, the individual will assist students with personal care needs and respond to medical emergencies as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides social, emotional, behavioral, and educational support for students with significant disabilities.
  • Confers with teacher(s) on a regular basis to assist in evaluating special education student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings to reinforce instructional objectives.
  • Assists in the maintenance of classroom resources and students' files/records.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in various school settings to provide a safe learning environment.
  • Provides direct academic, functional, vocational, and specifically designed instruction.
  • Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders.
  • Supports students with significant emotional regulation challenges.
  • Serves as advocate and support for students with disabilities in their least restrictive environment.
  • Encourages and fosters student independence in all settings.
  • Collects data as directed by the case manager/teacher.
  • Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
  • Responds to student medical needs within the scope of the position.
  • Assists students with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Guides students in independent study to ensure success.
  • Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Demonstrates professionalism through conduct, punctuality, and minimal absences.
  • Attends functions as assigned to acquire and convey information.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one of the following: qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment, an associate degree or higher, seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher, or completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator.
  • Training or willingness to get training in Right Response or other restraint/aversive interventions.
  • In-district applicants must be able to report to this position within five business days of being hired.
