About the position

New 42 is seeking a full-time Lead Cleaner to assist in maintaining the organization's commitment to excellence in facility management. This position is crucial for ensuring that the New 42nd Street facilities are well-maintained and operational, supporting the nonprofit's mission to catalyze the power of performing arts. The Lead Cleaner will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include plumbing, electrical work, light carpentry, patching and painting, as well as locksmith assignments. The ideal candidate will have a passion for their work and hold themselves to a high standard of quality workmanship across these areas. In addition to performing daily facility operations, the Lead Cleaner will operate HVAC systems and respond to requests for temperature regulation and climate control. Daily building inspections will be part of the role, which includes checking all floors for light bulb replacements and general repairs throughout the building. The Lead Cleaner will also be responsible for arming and disarming the burglar alarm system and ensuring that all doors are locked before leaving the premises. This position may require serving as on-call additional coverage for The New Victory Theater when regularly assigned at the New 42nd Street Studios. The Lead Cleaner will also lead cleaning crews in daily tasks, ensuring that the facilities are clean and presentable. This includes removing snow from sidewalks and power washing the exterior as needed. The role requires the ability to learn and implement specialized cleaning techniques for different surfaces and to move furniture and equipment as directed, which may involve lifting and carrying heavy objects (up to 50 lbs). The Lead Cleaner will serve as a customer service and vendor liaison in the building for guests and renters, actively engaging in ongoing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work within the organization, and performing other duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform plumbing, electrical, light carpentry, patching/painting, and locksmith assignments.
  • Troubleshoot building systems and perform daily facility operations, including operating HVAC and responding to temperature regulation requests.
  • Conduct daily building inspections for light bulb replacements and general repairs.
  • Arm/disarm burglar alarm system and verify all doors are locked before leaving the building.
  • Serve as on-call additional coverage for The New Victory Theater when assigned at the New 42nd Street Studios.
  • Lead cleaning crews in daily tasks for the New 42nd Street Inc.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and power wash the sidewalk as needed.
  • Learn and implement specialized techniques for cleaning different surfaces.
  • Move furniture and equipment as directed, capable of lifting and carrying heavy objects (at least 50 lbs).
  • Act as a customer service and vendor liaison for guests and renters.
  • Engage in ongoing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work within the organization.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, light carpentry, locks, patching/painting, and cleaning.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; reaching above shoulder level; fine finger dexterity; significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Computer skills are a plus.
