About the position

The W87-1 Systems Design Lead at Sandia National Laboratories is responsible for leading the systems development lifecycle for the W87-1 Program, which focuses on modernizing the W87-1 warhead. This role involves technical execution, integration with internal and external partners, and ensuring alignment with the War Reserve design. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Department of Defense and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, to manage critical program developments and maintain technical rigor in a resource-constrained environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical meetings with the Program Chief Engineer (PCE).
  • Represent Sandia in partnerships with the Department of Defense (DoD) and other stakeholders.
  • Manage critical program developments and operate in a dynamic environment.
  • Ensure integration of the War Reserve design across all variants and interfaces.
  • Develop partnerships within Systems and Component Product Realization Teams (PRTs).
  • Represent technical authority while collaborating with multi-site team leads.
  • Assure technical rigor of system design and qualification approaches.
  • Develop, prioritize, mitigate, and track critical knowledge gaps and associated risks.
  • Conduct peer reviews with internal and external technical subject matter experts.
  • Promote effective communication and balance technical and programmatic priorities.

Requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related STEM field with 4 years of experience; OR a Master's degree with 8 years of experience; OR a Bachelor's degree with 12 years of experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent (DoD Top Secret clearance).
  • Proven ability to lead large, cross-organization, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience with nuclear weapons Systems Engineering on a life extension program.
  • Experience with Phase 6.X NSE program execution.
  • Experience in Phase 6.3 and 6.4 on an LEP, Mod, or related NW modernization program.
  • Experience working with NSE production agencies and external customers, including the DoD.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and organizational skills.
