About the position

The Manager of Nuclear Deterrence - Mechanical Design and Engineering at Sandia National Laboratories is responsible for leading a team of engineers and technologists in developing innovative mechanical design solutions. This role involves overseeing the design process, ensuring high-quality outputs, and managing project deliverables to meet customer needs in support of national security initiatives. The position requires strong leadership, communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple technical teams.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a team of Engineers and Technologists in Mechanical Design.
  • Develop and implement strategies for innovative design solutions and analysis.
  • Lead staff in critical thinking to develop design solutions and deliver high-quality mechanical designs.
  • Manage and coordinate specific deliverables, budgets, schedules, and staffing requirements for ND and SPP customer needs.
  • Oversee the work of engineers and designers to ensure adherence to project standards and quality.
  • Collaborate with peers and partners across the Labs to fulfill commitments and impact cross-cut technology areas.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain higher-level clearances.
  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills for developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the design, development, production, and/or qualification of high-consequence systems.
  • Ability to effectively allocate and manage resources to meet performance, cost, and schedule requirements.
  • Experience leading and managing R&D engineering projects through complexity.
  • Social acuity and emotional intelligence to resolve ambiguous and contentious issues.
