About the position

The Client Advocate at Maitri is a full-time role focused on providing culturally responsive advocacy services to survivors of gender-based violence, particularly within the South Asian community. This position involves managing a helpline and supporting self-sufficiency programs, requiring a compassionate and trauma-informed approach to assist clients effectively. The advocate will work collaboratively across teams to ensure tailored services that meet the specific needs of survivors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate live helpline coverage during a 3-hour slot between 9am and 3pm Mon-Fri.
  • Offer emotional support, crisis intervention, safety planning, peer counseling, referrals, and other resources during helpline coverage.
  • Collect and maintain data on calls received and compile reports as needed on Helpline program.
  • Facilitate evaluation surveys to gather learnings for improving Helpline services.
  • Manage cases of clients as needed and maintain an updated resource list.
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements and ethical obligations of the program and agency.
  • Conduct needs assessments during intake for EEP & Housing programs.
  • Enroll clients in the Maitri Scholarship program and track their progress.
  • Provide case management and follow-up support to clients regularly.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and conducting workshops for clients and the community.
  • Develop partnerships with agencies and companies to increase training/job opportunities for clients.
  • Assist in general administrative work and ensure accurate maintenance of records and timely reporting.
  • Attend monthly staff and volunteer meetings to foster understanding and communication within the team.
  • Support agency activities and events as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with at least 1 year of work experience in DV advocacy, community-based advocacy, or social service work.
  • Fluency in at least one South Asian language in addition to English.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working effectively with people in crisis situations with patience, compassion, and flexibility.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and prioritizing effectively.
  • Basic proficiency in using Internet, MS Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Valid US work authorization and a valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working respectfully with persons of diverse ethnic, religious, educational, language, sexual orientation, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and some evenings and/or weekends based on agency needs.
  • Completion of 40hr California State Domestic Violence Counselor certification (training will be provided).
