About the position

The Client Advocate position at the Metropolitan Public Defender's Office is focused on supporting individuals accused of crimes who cannot afford legal representation. The role involves working closely with clients to identify their needs, facilitate access to resources, and assist in the development of defense strategies. This position emphasizes social justice and aims to provide compassionate support to marginalized communities within the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with attorneys regarding potential mental illness, substance use disorder, and/or intellectual and developmental issues of clients.
  • Identify client's challenges and barriers to receiving services.
  • Assist in discerning the need for forensic evaluations.
  • Build trust with clients using empathy, active listening, and a client-centered approach.
  • Work with attorneys by utilizing education on social service processes and strategic mitigation.
  • Interview clients and document their history.
  • Provide re-entry documentation.
  • Identify appropriate treatment options and facilitate treatment admissions.
  • Assist clients in crisis and provide emergency assistance for necessities.
  • Provide regular visitation and support to clients experiencing long-term incarceration.
  • Emphasize cultural competence when interacting with diverse clients.
  • Support the defense team on major felony cases and testify in court as needed.
  • Develop strong collaborations with community-based agencies and organizations.
  • Document work with clients and write reports as required.
  • Attend trainings and continuing education as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in psychology, social work, sociology, or a related degree.
  • Two years or more experience working in a social services agency or in the criminal justice system.
  • Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, sociology, or a related discipline preferred.
  • One year experience working in a social services agency or in the criminal justice system.
