About the position

The Climate Justice Organizer plays a vital role in advancing environmental equity through various organizing activities, including member recruitment, training, and campaign management. This position focuses on prioritizing vulnerable communities, addressing environmental injustices, and facilitating a sustainable economic transition. The organizer will work to mitigate the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized groups, tackling issues such as health impacts from oil and gas drilling, housing inequalities, and food security.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement educational programs on climate justice, including workshops and leadership trainings for members.
  • Train members to conduct participatory action research and engage in community-based climate risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with district health and welfare councils to address local climate justice issues and support recommendations to the UDW Executive Board.
  • Coordinate with field staff on leadership development and involve climate justice-focused members in UDW's priority campaigns.
  • Support UDW's community resilience program coordinator in organizing townhalls on climate resilience and justice.
  • Coordinate joint projects with environmental and climate justice ally organizations, recruiting and supporting member participation.
  • Conduct research on climate justice issues relevant to UDW.
  • Advocate for policies promoting a just transition to a sustainable economy.
  • Identify, recruit, train, and develop union leaders focused on climate justice issues.
  • Support members during climate-related emergencies or disasters.
  • Create and maintain a database of climate-vulnerable members.
  • Mobilize and engage membership for climate justice events and actions.
  • Collaborate with local government agencies on climate adaptation and mitigation plans.
  • Develop effective communication systems to reach members on climate justice matters.
  • Collaborate with language experts to ensure climate-related information is accessible to non-English speaking communities.
  • Maintain work files and comply with administrative reporting related to climate justice initiatives.
  • Develop metrics and evaluation methods to assess the impact of climate justice initiatives.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and auto insurance that covers business driving.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 7+ years of experience in labor organizing or environmental initiatives, particularly in social justice contexts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intersectional issues related to climate change.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing community-based climate resilience strategies.
  • Experience in policy advocacy, particularly in environmental and labor-related areas.
  • Proficiency in data management and analysis tools relevant to climate justice research and reporting.
  • Experience in developing and delivering educational programs on complex topics to diverse audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Russian, Assyrian, Somali, or Arabic.
  • Experience in grant writing or fundraising for environmental or social justice initiatives.
  • Familiarity with California's specific environmental challenges and climate policies.
