About the position

The Climate Policy Analyst (CPA 3) will lead the Bureau of Adaptation and Community Engagement within the Office of Climate Change, focusing on climate change adaptation initiatives and municipal actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This role involves managing the Climate Smart Communities (CSC) program and ensuring compliance with various climate-related laws and directives.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the Community Risk and Resiliency Act (CRRA) and ensure compliance with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing climate adaptation programs, including the state adaptation and resilience plan and Extreme Heat Action Plan.
  • Provide strategic direction to staff and manage contractors and researchers.
  • Evaluate technical information related to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • Advise DEC divisions on the implementation of CRRA and maximize the effectiveness of the CSC program.
  • Represent DEC on interagency and interstate committees.
  • Lead internal project teams and coordinate interactions with other state agencies and stakeholders.
  • Conduct analyses and draft or review reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as atmospheric science, environmental science, public policy, or related disciplines.
  • Four years of professional experience in environmental policy establishment or climate-relevant policy preparation and implementation.
  • Experience in preparing environmental analysis of climate change issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • A Juris Doctor or master's degree in a related field can substitute for one year of specialized experience.
