About the position

The Clinic Medical Assistant (MA) provides support in the medical field by performing various medical and clerical activities to assure quality care and a more efficient workplace. The role involves escorting patients to exam rooms, obtaining and documenting essential data such as chief complaints, allergies, vital signs, pain levels, medication history, and fall risk. The MA prepares the exam room with the necessary equipment and supplies for patient visits and assists with exams and procedures as requested. Additionally, the MA utilizes written Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa policies and universal precautions when performing lab and diagnostic tests, reporting and documenting all critical test values to the provider, and maintaining quality control records as applicable. The MA also assists in scheduling patients for appointments and reviews test preparation handouts with patients, referring them to providers or registered nurses for further education if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Escorts patients to exam rooms and documents essential data including chief complaints, allergies, vital signs, pain levels, medication history, and fall risk.
  • Prepares exam rooms with necessary equipment and supplies for patient visits.
  • Assists with exams and procedures as requested.
  • Utilizes Mercy Medical Center policies and universal precautions when performing lab and diagnostic tests.
  • Reports and documents all critical lab/diagnostic test values to the provider.
  • Maintains and documents quality controls as applicable, including logs and proficiency tests.
  • Assists in scheduling patients for office appointments and lab/diagnostic tests/referrals.
  • Reviews written test preparation handouts with patients and documents in medical records.
  • Refers patients to providers or registered nurses for education as required.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved school for medical assistant required.
  • Credentialed as a medical assistant (CMA, RMA, NCMA) is required; CCMA certification accepted with successful completion of a training program.
