About the position

The Clinical Assistant (Medical Assistant) at Mount Sinai Health System provides essential clinical and administrative support to physicians and surgeons in the Dermatology department. This role involves coordinating patient care, serving as a liaison among various stakeholders, and mentoring less experienced staff members. The Clinical Assistant is responsible for ensuring effective daily operations and quality patient care, while also fulfilling clerical duties and assisting in medical procedures as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, families, healthcare providers, nursing homes, homecare providers, patient employers and insurance companies to ensure quality patient care.
  • Coordinates the daily activities of the physician team staff to ensure effective and efficient daily operations flow.
  • Fulfills patient care responsibilities including checking schedules, organizing patient flow, assisting patients, taking vital signs, and relaying instructions to patients and families.
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities such as sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, and managing charts using the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Enters orders into the EMR system or prepares prescription refill requests for physician approval.
  • May perform medical scribe functions as directed by the supervising physician.
  • Inventories, orders, or re-stocks medical supplies as applicable.
  • Provides set-up of examination room and instruments in accordance with proper sterilization techniques.
  • Maintains logging system for medications, point of care testing, and sterilization processes.
  • Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements.
  • May perform appointment scheduling or the booking of surgeries/procedures.
  • May check and verify and update insurance information and perform pre-certification for procedures as necessary.
  • Provides training and mentoring to Level I MA staff.
  • May assist in establishing Medical Assistant I and II schedules and workflow.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Completion of a certificate Medical Assistant program from an accredited school
  • Completion of a Medical Scribe training program (if required by the department)
  • 3+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant
  • BCLS certification - Required Issuing Authority: AHA
