About the position

The Clinical Assistant in Otolaryngology provides essential clinical and administrative support to physicians and surgeons, ensuring effective patient care coordination. This role involves acting as a liaison among various stakeholders, including patients, families, healthcare providers, and insurance companies, while also mentoring less experienced staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between physicians, patients, families, healthcare providers, nursing homes, homecare providers, patient employers, and insurance companies to ensure quality patient care.
  • Coordinate the daily activities of the physician team staff to ensure effective and efficient daily operations flow.
  • Fulfill patient care responsibilities, including checking schedules, organizing patient flow, assisting patients as needed, and preparing for exams.
  • Assist physicians with various procedures, take vital signs, relay instructions to patients and families, and provide pertinent information.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities, including sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, and managing charts.
  • Enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests for physician approval.
  • May perform medical scribe functions as directed by the supervising physician.
  • Inventory, order, or re-stock medical supplies as applicable and maintain examination room setup according to sterilization techniques.
  • Check expiration dates on medications and medical supplies, disposing of them appropriately as per institution policy.
  • Comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to hazardous substances.
  • May perform appointment scheduling or the booking of surgeries/procedures, preparing charts and consent forms as needed.
  • May perform proficient phlebotomy duties and verify/update insurance information.
  • Provide training and mentoring to Level I MA staff and assist in establishing schedules and workflows.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Completion of a certificate Medical Assistant program from an accredited school
  • Completion of a Medical Scribe training program (if required by the department)
  • 3+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant
  • BCLS certification - Required

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Phlebotomy
  • Valid BLS Certification
