About the position

The Clinical Dietitian in Inpatient Nutrition at Geisinger is responsible for providing safe, ethical, and evidence-based nutritional therapy to patients. This role involves assessing individual nutritional needs, developing care plans, and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient care. The position emphasizes the importance of documentation, patient education, and participation in quality assurance activities, all while working in a clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assess individual nutritional needs through interviews, medical records, and discussions with healthcare team members.
  • Develop and implement nutritional care plans, including dietary recommendations and feeding protocols.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to set patient care goals.
  • Document nutritional assessments and care plans in accordance with established standards.
  • Evaluate patients' nutritional status and make recommendations for optimal care.
  • Counsel patients and families on nutrition and therapeutic diets, considering their backgrounds.
  • Conduct group nutrition classes as needed.
  • Write nutrition-related orders for hospitalized patients following clinical policies.
  • Advocate for individuals and groups regarding nutrition and health issues.
  • Plan for continuing nutrition care post-discharge using available resources.
  • Design referral processes to facilitate access to Registered Dietitians.
  • Implement quality assurance and performance improvement activities to monitor service outcomes.
  • Compile statistics and complete productivity worksheets in a timely manner.
  • Create and revise patient instruction materials and menu items.
  • Participate in committees and represent the Clinical Nutrition department.
  • Engage in research studies related to clinical nutrition.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or related field is required.
  • Pennsylvania Registered Dietitian License is required.
  • Registered or eligible to sit for registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Basic Life Support Instructor certification within 1 year is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in inpatient nutrition care.
  • Familiarity with electronic information management tools for practice and research.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and cultural backgrounds.
