About the position

Cherry Hospital, a State Psychiatric Hospital serving the eastern region of North Carolina, is recruiting for a Clinical Dietitian I position. This position provides assessment of nutritional status and makes recommendations for nutritional needs. The position directs the development and implementation of a nutritional plan of care; counsels patients in the guidelines, acceptance and selection of foods needed to meet nutritional goals; and counsels family and/or caregivers. Also, this position will monitor progress and reassess as indicated to provide for long term care when needed. Position serves as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and as a consultant for other staff due to nutritional knowledge and acts as a liaison between area of assignment, medical staff and Nutritional Services Department. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, on call rotating weekends. This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Responsibilities

  • Assess nutritional status and make recommendations for nutritional needs.
  • Direct the development and implementation of a nutritional plan of care.
  • Counsel patients in the guidelines, acceptance, and selection of foods needed to meet nutritional goals.
  • Counsel family and/or caregivers.
  • Monitor progress and reassess as indicated for long term care.
  • Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Act as a consultant for other staff due to nutritional knowledge.
  • Liaise between area of assignment, medical staff, and Nutritional Services Department.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in foods and nutrition or a related area from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Current registration, in good standing, administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics, or related area from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a clinical dietary setting.
  • Ability to stay informed on current principles and practices of dietetics and nutrition.
  • Ability to function as an independent worker with expertise in the assessment of nutritional status.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with all levels of Hospital personnel and with patients.
  • Ability to lead individual and group nutritional education sessions.
  • Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team to formulate individual treatment plans.
