About the position

The Clinical Engineering Technician II position at the University of Maryland Medical System involves performing highly skilled repair and maintenance of complex electronic patient care and clinical engineering equipment. Under the limited supervision of the Clinical Engineering Supervisor and/or Department Manager, the technician will be responsible for installations, project management, calibration, and routine maintenance of medical electronic equipment. This role is crucial in ensuring that all medical equipment operates safely and efficiently, adhering to departmental standards and manufacturers' operating and repair manuals. The technician will perform preventive maintenance, repair, and calibration services on a variety of complex electronic patient care equipment, clinical laboratory devices, computerized pneumatic conveying equipment, and basic radiographic equipment. This includes interpreting and performing inspection procedures, documenting actions in accordance with Joint Commission regulations, and identifying potential safety hazards associated with the equipment. The technician will respond to work requests, troubleshoot malfunctions, and make necessary repairs in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring that all equipment is maintained to the highest standards. In addition to technical skills, the role requires effective communication with nursing, allied health, and medical staff to prevent and minimize equipment failure. The technician will also participate in the evaluation of new biomedical equipment and assist management with maintaining departmental records, including maintenance requests and safety forms. Education on the use and operation of clinical equipment is also part of the responsibilities, along with responding to emergency codes as trained and assigned. The technician is expected to uphold the highest standards of service excellence and comply with all relevant laws and regulations regarding patient privacy and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and calibration services on complex electronic patient care and clinical laboratory equipment.
  • Interpret and perform inspection procedures, documenting actions in accordance with Joint Commission regulations.
  • Identify potential safety hazards of equipment and document actions taken to eliminate them.
  • Respond to work requests, troubleshoot malfunctions, and make necessary repairs in a safe and timely manner.
  • Install, repair, and maintain complex diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including electronic and mechanical components.
  • Schedule third-party repair of equipment when needs exceed departmental expertise.
  • Maintain test equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Communicate regularly with nursing, allied health, and medical staff regarding equipment operation.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new, rental, or demonstration biomedical equipment and make recommendations regarding acquisition.
  • Assist management with oversight on maintenance of departmental records and compliance with regulations.
  • Assist with education on the use and operation of clinical equipment.
  • Respond to emergency codes as trained and assigned.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or Certificate in Biomedical Equipment Technology or related field, or Military Biomedical Technology Course required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of medical equipment in a hospital setting, with at least 2 years in maintenance of physiological monitoring equipment.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Highly effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable trade areas and listening skills.
  • Organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Results-oriented, mature, self-developing, and possess integrity.
