About the position

The Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS) at Oak Street Health plays a crucial role in supporting primary care providers by managing clinical documentation. This position allows providers to focus on delivering exceptional patient care while the CIS documents patient encounters, assists with clinical workflows, and ensures accurate coding. The role is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in healthcare, particularly those on a pre-med track or interested in health informatics, as it provides valuable hands-on experience in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Documenting patient encounters in a structured note, including the history of the present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam.
  • Assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes for patient visits.
  • Preparing After Visit Summaries for patients.
  • Consulting with providers to ensure accurate and specific documentation.
  • Requesting and reviewing medical records to support clinical documentation improvement.
  • Leveraging population health tools to enhance clinical documentation.
  • Preparing for and supporting Daily Huddles and Clinical Documentation Reviews.
  • Placing orders and referrals as needed for patient care.
  • Addressing administrative tasks and supporting the care team with additional responsibilities related to clinical documentation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications from a pre-medical degree or prior clinical experience.
  • Advanced listening and communication skills.
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows.
  • Ability to adapt to new workflows and quickly learn new concepts and skills.
  • Ability to type 70+ words per minute.
  • Ability to work approximately 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior clinical experience, including shadowing and/or volunteering.
  • Prior scribe or transcription experience.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages spoken by the communities served.
