The Cytogenetics Technologist Trainee position at Labcorp in Shelton, CT, is designed for individuals looking to start or advance their careers in Medical Lab Science. This role involves processing clinical specimens for cancer cytogenetic diagnosis in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. The position includes comprehensive training for new graduates and emphasizes the importance of delivering quality patient care through accurate testing and results reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Process clinical specimens for cancer cytogenetic diagnosis including accessioning, tissue culture, harvesting, slide preparation, staining, and microscope analysis.
  • Perform routine procedures such as automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing.
  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria.
  • Execute technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  • Make technical decisions regarding testing and problem-solving.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to ensure quality patient care.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and adhere to personal protective equipment protocols.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology, or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements.
  • Previous clinical laboratory testing experience is not required.
  • ASCP or AMT certification is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Proficient with computers; familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus.
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.
