About the position

The Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Microbiology Lab at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport is responsible for receiving and preparing specimens, performing laboratory tests, and ensuring quality control procedures are followed. This role plays a crucial part in diagnosing and treating diseases by providing accurate laboratory data. The position requires adherence to safety and regulatory compliance guidelines while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and prepares specimens according to standard protocols and procedures.
  • Performs laboratory tests and calculations to provide data for diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Conducts quality control procedures and evaluates test performance and results.
  • Calibrates, maintains, and monitors equipment used in analytical determinations.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures as appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient-related information.
  • Performs, develops, and interprets routine and/or specialized laboratory testing independently without error.
  • Records quality control and instrument maintenance/troubleshooting, making judgments concerning results.
  • Adheres to regulatory compliance guidelines and maintains awareness of accreditation standards for laboratories.
  • Participates in performance improvement opportunities by assisting in data collection and analysis.
  • Manages supply and reagent inventory to support business development and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Adapts behavior to specific patient populations, respecting privacy and communication styles.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science.
  • Current license in the state of practice (if applicable).
  • ASCP, AMT, or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist.
  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in performing duties and conflict resolution.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
