About the position

The Clinical Nurse I is a professional care provider responsible for coordinating and delivering safe, effective individualized nursing care for patients, while also providing supportive care to their significant others. This role involves applying the nursing process and utilizing technical skills for patient care delivery, requiring nursing judgment based on scientific principles, problem-solving, and teaching/learning.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, plans, and cares for the total needs of patients considering age-specific needs.
  • Makes appropriate and timely decisions in crisis or emergency situations.
  • Works and communicates effectively with a variety of individuals.
  • Provides general direction, guidance, and coordination of patient care given by other nursing staff.
  • Operates equipment correctly and safely necessary for providing patient care.
  • Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation activities.
  • Applies principles of infection control and safety.
  • Evaluates patients presenting complaints at triage.
  • Performs admission assessments on assigned patients upon arrival to the department.
  • Obtains assessment information from patients/significant others as appropriate.
  • Collects assessment data to formulate nursing diagnoses and provide appropriate age-specific care.
  • Performs ongoing and scheduled reassessments according to departmental standards.
  • Establishes nursing diagnoses, problems, desired outcomes, and interventions based on assessed needs.
  • Collaborates with patients, significant others, and healthcare team members in planning care during hospitalization and for discharge.
  • Develops nursing plans of care consistent with therapies of other disciplines, considering patient care standards and cultural values.
  • Communicates the nursing plan of care to patients and significant others.
  • Performs interventions competently and safely, prioritizing according to patient needs.
  • Provides education to patients and significant others based on assessed learning needs.
  • Demonstrates competence in the safe and effective use of clinical equipment.
  • Records accurately and legibly in both paper and electronic formats.
  • Performs charge nurse/team leader responsibilities when assigned.
  • Plans and coordinates patient care activities, identifying problems and recommending solutions.
  • Demonstrates effective working relationships with all healthcare team members, patients, and families.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Three (3) years of nursing experience in an acute care or hospital setting.
  • One (1) year of nursing experience in Critical Care or Same Day Surgery in an acute care hospital, level 1 trauma hospital or teaching hospital.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification must be obtained within six months of hire date.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Supports (PALS) certification must be obtained within six months of hire date.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a college or university.
  • Certification in clinical area of specialty.
  • Two (2) years of full-time work experience in Critical Care or Same Day Surgery Nursing.
