About the position

Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a full-time Clinical Research AI Research Scientist II. The AI scientist will lead the analysis of large electronic health record data, including unstructured clinical notes, administrative data, and patient-reported data, to guide care delivery and improve our understanding of cardiovascular outcomes. This role requires expertise in multi-modal and multi-task learning, weak supervision, knowledge representation, and natural language processing. The successful candidate will guide the development of AI-based models to analyze and extract clinical features from unstructured data and develop prediction models using longitudinal electronic health record data. The scientist will leverage the electronic health record data of the nation's largest healthcare system and will work closely with Dr. Sandhu and Dr. Heidenreich's Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Group. In collaboration with the rest of the team, the Scientist will develop and evaluate these models and publish findings in peer-reviewed publications. The analyses conducted will also be used to develop and inform quality improvement interventions aimed at enhancing the delivery of cardiovascular care across the healthcare system. This position is critical in advancing the understanding of cardiovascular outcomes through innovative AI solutions and will contribute significantly to the field of clinical research.

Responsibilities

• Develops artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing algorithms.
• Designs artificial intelligence solutions to solve business problems.
• Implements complex data systems.
• Presents research and makes suggestions to leadership.
• Recommends changes to existing models with a focus on innovative algorithms.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or Advanced Degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in a relevant field.
• 2 years of related experience in AI and data science.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Expertise and hands-on experience using LLMs, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, etc.
• Proficient programming skills in Python and R or another relevant programming language commonly used in data science and natural language processing.
• Strong record of distinguished scholarly achievement and a strong publication record.
• Willingness and ability to work in a collaborative research environment.

Nice-to-haves

• Degree in Biomedical Informatics, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Health Services Research, or a related discipline.
• Ability to work in a highly collaborative, results-driven, fast-paced environment.
• Ability to successfully interact with a diverse team, including clinicians, IT staff, and scientists across domains.
• Independent, and self-motivated researcher who is open to receiving feedback, as well as work with directed autonomy.
• A background in medicine or other related healthcare field is highly desirable.
• Strong expertise in hands-on experience in using LLM for medical text processing.
• Ability to utilize LLMs, RL, and deep learning to build predictive models for diverse applications in biomedical informatics.
• Experience working with large-scale biomedical datasets and patient electronic health records (EHRs).
• Familiarity with biomedical terminology.
• Interest in equity, bias, and representation in evaluating datasets and implementing new technology tools for patient benefit.
• Interest and experience in mentoring and/or supervising younger scholars and their work.
