About the position

The Clinical Research Assistant at Rhode Island Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting clinical research projects by assisting Principal Investigators and Clinical Research Coordinators in the acquisition and analysis of patient information. This entry-level position involves patient interaction, data entry, and statistical analysis, contributing to both qualitative and quantitative research efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Principal Investigators in coordinating clinical research activities related to specific studies.
  • Identify and follow up with patients meeting criteria for inclusion in clinical research studies, ensuring protocol eligibility requirements are met.
  • Establish and maintain study records for each participant, including interviewing patients and facilitating informed consent.
  • Review medical records to abstract necessary information and follow up on missing data such as laboratory test results.
  • Monitor adherence to research protocols and alert physicians of any discrepancies in laboratory tests or medication protocols.
  • Perform research-based EKGs, vital signs, blood spinning, and shipping of blood and tissue products as required by protocol.
  • Collect and organize patient data for data entry, operating computer systems to enter study information into databases.
  • Conduct computer-assisted statistical analyses and prepare related graphs and charts of the data gathered.
  • Participate in quantitative and qualitative analyses of research data and assist in planning research protocols.
  • Coordinate activities of others assigned to the research project, ensuring tasks are completed effectively.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Applied or Life Sciences or a related area with courses in research methodologies and microcomputer systems.
  • Three to six months of on-the-job experience to become familiar with specific research studies.
  • Knowledge of research methodology theory and techniques.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and gather research information effectively.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and hospital professionals.
  • Analytical skills to develop research protocols and perform statistical analyses.
