About the position

The University of Minnesota's Research Animal Resources (RAR) department is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian to provide comprehensive veterinary care for laboratory animals in an AAALAC-accredited research program. This role involves preventative, emergency, and routine medical care, as well as regulatory compliance, research support, and teaching responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be an autonomous, motivated, and service-oriented team player, contributing to a dynamic veterinary team while engaging with students, staff, and faculty. The position also includes opportunities for independent or collaborative research and process development within a growing department.

Responsibilities

  • Provide preventative, emergency, and routine veterinary care to research animals.
  • Examine, diagnose, prescribe medication, perform surgery, and provide humane euthanasia as necessary.
  • Perform regular rounds of all animals in assigned clinical areas and communicate findings to veterinary technicians and research personnel.
  • Provide emergency veterinary services after-hours, holidays, and weekends on a rotating basis.
  • Participate in the design and review of research protocols and advise investigators on appropriate medications and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state laws regarding animal transportation, housing, and use.
  • Create and offer lectures, labs, and seminars for veterinary students and staff.
  • Mentor and train veterinary residents and technicians in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Identify areas for process improvement and assist with implementing changes.
  • Participate in independent or collaborative research projects related to clinical laboratory animal medicine.

Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school.
  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Minnesota.
  • Experience in laboratory animal medicine or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse personnel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with gnotobiotics and non-human primate models.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance in research settings.
  • Teaching experience in veterinary medicine.
